Camps and Excursions

Students participate in year level camps in Years 5, 7, 9, and 12. These camps are opportunities for students to exercise their independence, experience new things, and form strong connections with their classmates.

Excursions help students connect their classroom learning to real-world scenarios. Immersive experiences bolster learning through active engagement and authentic first-hand interactions.

Camps and excursions are compulsory and form part of the Curriculum.

Camps

Year 5

The Year 5 camp gives students the opportunity to participate in challenging activities with the goal to develop stronger relationships with their peers. They can also engage in Liturgy services and experience an authentic Salesian Oratory.

Year 7

In their first year of high school, Year 7 students participate in an orientation camp where they will have the opportunity to strengthen old relationships and make new ones.

Year 9

In Year 9, students participate in a ‘Challenge Camp’ where they must work collaboratively and challenge themselves in a range of situations that they would not normally be placed in.

Year 12 Retreat

The Year 12 Retreat is a single, but pivotal, day on our annual calendar. It is a time for our students to reflect on themselves as individuals, the relationships they have formed at school and to give thanks and affirm those with whom they have shared their secondary schooling life. This event is one of the most powerful and enjoyable experiences of a student’s time at Xavier College.

Excursions and Incursions

Excursions take our students’ learning beyond our school gates, and incursions bring interactive learning opportunities to our students on campus.

Some examples of excursions that have occurred annually in recent years include:

  • Reception students visiting local churches as part of their Religious Education classes.
  • Year 1 students learn about different environments and ecosystems animals live in, and visit Adelaide Zoo to see the animals in real life.
  • Year 2 students continue their learning about natural environments ecosystems, focusing on aquatic life. They visit the Marine Discovery Centre for a fully immersive experience.
  • Year 9 students visit the Barossa Goldfields to observe geological features and old mining operations, relevant to their Science classes. On the same day, as part of their Humanities studies, students visit Seppeltsfield winery and Barossa Valley Chocolate Company to compare and contrast business operations of different scales.
  • Year 12 Art students visit the SACE Art Show and Art Gallery of South Australia to fill them with inspiration for the year ahead.
