Sport
Our students are connected to their local community through sport.
The College fosters this connection by offering a range of sporting opportunities, including interschool competitions, House and Oratory sport, inter-house events, and the Pedal Prix. Additionally, we encourage students to involve themselves in their local community by participating in sporting teams. This approach allows our students to expand their connections beyond our College community and support local clubs, thereby opening doors to further community involvement.
Interschool Competitions
Xavier College is involved in multiple interschool sporting competitions each year, including:
- Catholic Schools Swimming Carnival
- Trinity College Interschool Gymkhana
- Knights of the Southern Cross (annual competition between Xavier College, Thomas More College, and St Columba College)
- Handley Cup (annual competition with St Mark’s College, Port Pirie)
- St Columba Sporting Exchange
- SAPSASA Athletics.
Student teams are formed on a voluntary basis in preparation for these events.
Pedal Prix
Our students and staff have been involved in the Pedal Prix for more than 10 years.
Students work on the Xavier College entry in teams during the year, maintaining the vehicle, fundraising and building a real sense of community and teamwork.
Our students learn a range of skills, including:
- teamwork, as they support each other at training and competitions
- persistence
- fitness
- understanding mechanics of the vehicles in terms of gearing and steering.
Xavier College students drive three cars in the Pedal Prix: Bosco I, II and III. All these cars cater for different abilities, fitness levels and speed – but they all provide our students with a great chance to have fun!
House and Oratory Sport
House Sport and Be Active are an integral part of the Oratory program. They are a wonderful opportunity for students to engage in a range of sporting activities against students in their own Oratory and House for fun and fitness. Students are able to play with friends and get better acquainted with students from all year levels as well as staff from within their House.
This program has been designed to keep our staff and students active. Students and staff wear PE uniform on Tuesdays and Thursdays and this allows students and their Oratory teacher to participate in a variety of different fun activities each week including:
- Volleyball
- Touch football
- Ultimate frisbee
- Korfball
- T-Ball
- Badminton
- Table tennis
- General fitness activities.
Inter-House Events
Each year a range of annual inter-house events are held. Students gain points for their House team by participating and competing in:
- Athletics Carnival
- Swimming Carnival
- Cross Country.
The House which wins most points overall in these events wins the perpetual Sports Shield for the year.
