Agriculture

Agriculture at Xavier College focuses on preparing students for the diverse career opportunities available in the agriculture industry. This subject is unique to our Gawler Belt Campus.

Year 10

In Year 10, our students learn about animal ethics, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander agricultural practices, dairy calf management and vegetable growth and management. Students take care of the school layer chickens and dairy calves that we receive from a local farmer as part of Cows Create Careers. This prepares students for the Year 11 goat handling and animal growth component.

Year 11

In Year 11, agriculture is a one semester elective that is available in both semesters. In Semester 1, we cover agricultural pest management, wine making, goat handling and animal growth, and science as a human endeavour. Semester 2 covers science as a human endeavour, olive oil production, goat handling, animal growth and business innovation.

Year 12

In Year 12, agriculture is a full year course, covering plant breeding, animal nutrition, soil science, science as a human endeavour, pig production and an external investigation on the student’s topic of choice. Students have the opportunity to participate in various excursions and events throughout the year, including visits to wineries, our local AGT branch and the Careers in Animal and Vet Science Day.
