Fred’s Food Van Donation
Last week, Year 10 Hospitality students recently completed a unit titled ‘People in Need’, which focused on raising awareness about homelessness in Australia and understanding the nutritional needs of those affected. The unit provided students with the opportunity to not only learn about homelessness but also to put their skills into practice by preparing meals for individuals experiencing hardship.
One of the key aspects of the unit was understanding the importance of nutrition for individuals who are homeless, and how food can serve as both sustenance and a source of comfort. The students were tasked with creating both savory and sweet dishes that would meet the nutritional needs of people living on the streets or in temporary shelters.
The project culminated in a meaningful collaboration with Fred’s Food Van, a local service dedicated to providing hot meals and support to those in need. Students worked diligently to prepare a selection of carefully crafted dishes, ensuring that the meals were not only nutritious but also delicious and filling. The savory dishes were designed to provide essential energy and nourishment, while the sweet treats offered a comforting touch.
Lyn, a representative from Fred’s Food Van, visited the school to personally collect the students’ donations. She expressed her appreciation for the students’ hard work and the generosity behind their efforts.
This project not only taught students valuable culinary skills but also instilled in them a sense of empathy and social responsibility. It was an experience that showcased the impact that small acts of kindness and community involvement can have on those in need.
