Early Years Thriving People Excursion

Recently, our Year 1 and Year 2 students had the incredible opportunity to attend CESA’s Thriving People excursion at the Southern Cultural Immersion Living Kaurna Centre. This program was specifically designed to engage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students through a diverse range of activities that foster cultural appreciation and connection to the land.

The excursion catered specifically to some of our youngest learners, creating an enriching environment tailored to their developmental needs. The activities were designed to spark curiosity and provide hands-on experiences that resonated with their eagerness to learn.

The students kicked off their day with an inspiring bushwalk, where they learned about the local flora and fauna and the significance of the land to the Kaurna people. Guided by knowledgeable instructors, the students immersed themselves in the stories of the land, gaining a deeper understanding of the cultural heritage that surrounds them.

Following the bushwalk, the students participated in an artifacts session, where they had the chance to explore traditional tools and items used by Indigenous peoples. This hands-on experience encouraged them to ask questions about their history and traditions, enriching their learning experience.

The excursion concluded with a plant propagation activity, where students got their hands dirty by planting native species. This not only taught them about the importance of native plants but also emphasised sustainability and the role they can play in caring for the environment.

The Thriving People excursion was a resounding success, fostering engagement and connection among our Year 1 and 2 students. They left the Living Kaurna Centre with newfound knowledge and a stronger sense of identity and belonging. The variety of activities offered ensured that every student could find something they enjoyed, making for a memorable day.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the facilitators at the Southern Cultural Immersion Living Kaurna Centre for their dedication and passion in delivering such a rich educational experience. This excursion has undoubtedly left a lasting impact on our students, inspiring them to continue exploring and embracing their cultural heritage.

As we look forward to more opportunities for our students to connect with their culture and community, we celebrate the success of this excursion and the meaningful experiences it provided.
